Sheep Mentorship Program: Only Two Spaces Left!

Farms at Work

Spots Have Filled Up Quickly, So Sign Up Now for our Sheep Mentorship Program!

If you're looking for an opportunity to learn how to effectively manage and integrate sheep as a part of your farm business, and would like to learn from two of the most experienced shepherds in our region, then sign up now for our new Sheep Mentorship Program, set to begin on June 14.

Designed as an immersive, small-group learning experience for beginner shepherds, participants will learn hands-on, time-honoured approaches to flock management from two highly respected sheep breeders in Peterborough County. This curriculum-based mentorship program will take place over five field days from mid-June to September 2014, and participants will also receive four hours of individual support from the mentors between field days.

The program will focus on teaching mentees practical skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • How to get started in sheep
  • Flock nutrition
  • Animal Health
  • Reproduction and lambing
  • Routine management

Mentees will learn under the skilled direction of Bob and Gail Irvine (Rocky Lane Farm), who are experienced shepherds, teachers, and farming mentors, as well as active members of the Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency. They produce high quality pure-bred Polled Dorsets for sale as breeding stock, and have been involved with various provincial programs for performance testing, health, and breeding.
